IS BAND A CLASS? DO I GET COLLEGE CREDIT FOR IT?

Yes, all band classes are graded. You will get a grade as well as class credit. All band classes, except the Band I classes fulfill the fine arts requirement for both the CSU and UC systems. All band classes fulfill the Notre Dame fine arts graduation requirement.

DO I HAVE TO BUY AN INSTRUMENT OR A UNIFORM?

Instruments are provided by Notre Dame. Uniforms are purchased by the Band Booster Club. Each member needs to purchase a set of band warm-ups and tee shirt worn at all away games and the proper footwear for football season and parade season.

DOES BAND TAKE TIME OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL?

Yes, the band meets one night a week. Marching Band is not a class, therefore that performance area must be rehearsed outside of school time. Most performances take place outside of the school day. We publish a detailed rehearsal and performance schedule to help members keep track of commitments. Symphonic Band is not a class. Symphonic Band rehearsals replace marching band rehearsals during the spring semester.

DOES BEING IN BAND CONFLICT WITH ATHLETICS?

Yes and No. There are obviously some direct conflicts which we work around. It does require band members to keep close track of both team and band schedules. Being a band member and an athlete at Notre Dame teaches scheduling skills and certainly helps develop a sense of priorities. Members of the band participate in nearly every sport offered at N.D.

CAN I LEARN TO PLAY A BAND INSTRUMENT?

Yes, we offer two beginning band classes for Freshmen and Sophomores. They are Band I Intro. to Band - Winds, and Band I - Percussion. In class you will learn to play a band instrument. The band instruments are provided by the school. All you need is the desire and the enthusiasm to learn.

IF INTRO. BAND IS PART OF THE MARCHING BAND, HOW DO I DO THAT IF I DON'T KNOW HOW TO PLAY?

Members of the Intro. Bands learn to march with the rest of the band at Band Camp, and participate as Banner Carriers and N.D. Flags for the year. This helps the Intro. Band student become part of the band right from the start. They get to travel with the band to football games and parades. This makes the transition to band the following year an easy one.
