Notre Dame girls' golfers take third in West Covina tournament

Notre Dame was reminded Monday that the elite girls' golf programs in the South Bay extend beyond just Torrance, Palos Verdes and Peninsula.

After winning the West Covina tournament last season, Notre Dame placed third behind Mira Costa and North Torrance in its return to Sierra La Verne Country Club.

Mira Costa shot 308, one stroke behind the Knights' score last year, with North Torrance posting a 315 and Notre Dame recording 318.
Diamond Bar's Bethany Wu won a cardoff with Mira Costa's Andrea Lee after they both finished at 2-under 70.
Wu shot 33 on the back nine to Lee's 34 to claim the individual title.

North Torrance's Alice Jeong also won a cardoff with Fountain Valley's Lilia Vu for third after both golfers shot 72, including 36 on the back nine.

Jeong's lower score on the final six holes was the tiebreaker.

Katelyn Reynolds shot 77 and Tina Nagai carded a 79 for Notre Dame.

Arielle Valdez shot 80 and Sammy Winchester added an 82 for the Knights in the play-five, score-four format.

Notre Dame did beat Diamond Bar -- fifth with 328 -- which placed fourth at last year's Southern Section final, edging the Knights by four strokes for the final berth in the CIF/WSCGA regional tournament.
