The Notre Dame girls’ golf program prides itself on working hard, having fun, bringing out the best in each other - and winning championships happens to be the by-product of these things.
Our history includes 11 Mission League Championships, 2 CIF Divisional Championships and several tournament wins. In addition, the MVP of the league has been a Notre Dame golfer 12 times since 1999, which was the first year of Mission League girls’ golf program.
The young ladies who go through the program dedicate themselves to taking lessons, playing tournaments year round, participating in the off-season conditioning program, while maintaining good grades. Golfers develop excellent time management skills, patience, determination and most of all a high level of integrity. Many of our alumnae have gone on to play college golf, but even those who don’t take with them a love for the game that will stay with them forever. Participating in golf prepares the girls to be successful in all aspects of their future lives.
The 2014 season looks promising. Our four seniors-Lauren Crittenden, Kathryn Newton, Sammy Winchester and Janet Yeo have been the rock of the program the last 3 years. The big question is-which one will step up to be the MVP of the league this year? (Sammy won it last year). Juniors Paige Hollingsworth and Alyssa Buzzello will play a much bigger role this year, along with Sophomore Kennedy Menifield, and our two new freshmen Stephanie Ahn and Bernadine Corpin. Each girl is working to improve her game, gain confidence, and enjoy competition. The team goal is to create an environment that these things can happen. All the sacrifices required wouldn’t be worth it if we didn’t have so much fun with each other. A golf team really is a unique scenario with the individual goals and team goals separate yet intertwined. It is the best of both worlds. So watch for updates on the website and in the Daily News as the season progresses.

CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE BUILT IN THE OFF-SEASON
Last year the Varsity Girls’ Golf team experienced a new level of success. As CIF Champions (Northern Division), we have a lot to live up to and even higher expectations of ourselves as we begin the new school year. We bid farewell to our beloved seniors (3 out of the 4 are playing college golf) and welcome with open arms, 2 new freshmen-Paige Hollingsworth and Alyssa Buzzello.
The veterans worked hard in the weight room throughout the winter and spring months to increase strength and power. They also spent countless hours at the range, working on their putting, short game, and mental toughness as they spent week-ends at tournaments all over southern California. It is a yearlong commitment that the incoming freshmen have already bought in to what it takes to play golf at ND.
Preparation in the off season leads to confidence building in the pre-season. We will spend a week together at “Bootcamp” the first week of August where we will play 18/36 holes daily in Ventura County where most of the CIF competition takes place. After playing all day (walking, of course), we come back and work-out. We want to challenge ourselves so that when the match is on the line we have no doubts about ourselves or our team. We have added 2 more tough tournaments to our schedule so that we can compete against the top golfers in Southern California in preparation for CIF.
Thank you to the ND community for all the support and well wishes this past year. We are so excited to start playing as the 2012 Notre Dame Girls Golf Team and see where we can go this year.
