COACH KEVIN ROONEY

Coach Kevin Rooney has been Athletic Director and Football coach at Notre Dame High School since 1980.  Since 1993, Notre Dame Football has been one of the most consistently successful programs in the state of California, averaging 10.7 wins per year.  Over that span, Notre Dame has won 14 League Championships, 4 CIF Championships, and has been CIF Runner-up 3 times.  The undefeated 2004 team was named the Division II State Champions, ranked #2 in the Western U.S. and ranked #11 in the nation. In 5 of the last 7 years, Notre Dame Football has ranked among the top 25 in the nation at some point during the season.   

Following the 2005 season, Coach Rooney was named The Schutt Sports and American Football Monthly Magazine West Region Coach of the Year and was inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Following the 2004 season, he was presented the Gerald R. Ford All American High School Coach Award by the All American Football Foundation and was inducted into the California Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  Following the 2002 season, Coach Rooney was named The California State Coach of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports.  He is one of only 5 Catholic High School coaches to be named State Coach of the Year in the 58 year history of selections by Cal-Hi Sports.  He has been recognized as CIF Coach of the Year four times, and has also been named Coach of the Year twice by the Los Angeles Times and the Los Angeles Daily News.

Under Coach Rooney’s tutelage, Notre Dame Football has produced 5 USA Today Parade Magazine All-American (Chris Sailer ’95, Justin Fargas ’97, Travis Johnson ’00, Kai Forbath ’06 and Dayne Crist ’08), 4 US Army Bowl All-Americans (Kai Forbath ’06, Anthony McDonald ’08, Wes Horton ’08 and Dayne Crist ’08) and 2 Gatorade California State Players of the Year (Justin Fargas ’97 and Ryan Kasdorf ’09).



JOE MCNAB
Assistant Varsity Coach

Coach McNab is in his 30th year at Notre Dame. He coaches the defensive backs, wide receivers and serves as Defensive Coordinator. Year in and year out, Coach McNab’s defenses are among the top in Southern California. His stop units are always known for their sound fundamental play and relentless pursuit. He also serves as Notre Dame’s Head Boys’ and Girls’ Track Coach. Coach McNab played football, baseball and ran track at Serra High in San Mateo. He graduated from the University of Santa Clara where he played football and rugby while earning his degree in history.  He has taught Physical Education, History and Religion while at Notre Dame. Coach McNab and his wife Neezer reside in Northridge with their sons, Matthew ‘13, and Ryan.


JEFF KRAEMER
Assistant Varsity Coach

Coach Kraemer, the Offensive and Defensive Line Coach, is a 1978 Notre Dame graduate. Coach Kraemer begins his 31st year coaching at Notre Dame. He traditionally produces technically and fundamentally outstanding linemen. He earned his degree in Business from California State University at Northridge and is currently the Vice-President of WestCoast Products in Chatsworth. He resides in Northridge with his wife Cynthia and sons Grant and Derek.


MIKE CURIEL
Assistant Varsity Coach

Coach Curiel begins his 10th year at Notre Dame High School coaching linebackers, running backs and special teams. He graduated from Notre Dame in 1990 where he was First Team All League, Defensive MVP, and a Daily News All-Star. Coach Curiel went on to be an All-Conference Linebacker at Glendale College and an NSCA strength and conditioning All-American. He then attended Portland State University and was awarded the football team’s M.P. Schrunk Academic and Athletic Award. He graduated from Portland State with degrees in both Social Science and Biological Science and received his Masters’ in Education at Grand Canyon University. He served one year as a Graduate Assistant Coach at Portland State before returning to Notre Dame where he teaches Biology and Chemistry. Mike routinely speaks at clinics in the off-season regarding linebacker and special teams coaching and development. He is the first of seven siblings to graduate from Notre Dame High School. Mike enjoys fly fishing and rafting over the summer break.


ANTHONY VITALE
Assistant Varsity Coach

Coach Vitale coaches offensive and defensive linemen, and conducts clinics for offensive line play and development. Coach Vitale is an Alemany High School graduate where he was an All-League Offensive and Defensive Linemen. He continued his playing career at Los Angeles Valley College where he was named to the All-Western States Conference team and received the Most Valuable Defensive Freshman award. Coach Vitale teaches at St. Francis Xavier and is in his 11th year coaching at Notre Dame. Coach Vitale and his wife Diane currently reside in Valencia.

NICK GARCIA
Assistant Varsity Coach / Strength and Conditioning Coach

Coach Garcia coaches the running backs and linebackers. Coach Garcia is a graduate of St. Francis High School in Mountain View, CA, where he won All-WCAL honors as an offensive guard in football and a shot putter in track and field. Nick continued his football and track career at San Jose City College where he started at middle linebacker in football and continued to throw shot put. He then accepted a track scholarship to California State University Northridge (CSUN). While at CSUN, Coach Garcia earned Bachelor’s and Masters’ degrees in Kinesiology and was a two-time Big Sky champion in shot put. Coach Garcia teaches Physical Education at Notre Dame, coaches the throwing events for track and is the Strength and Conditioning coach. He resides in North Hills.


BUCKY BROOKS
Assistant Varsity Coach

Coach Brooks, a former standout football and track athlete, graduated from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill with a degree in Communications. This is his second season as a Assistant Varsity Coach. He was selected as the 48th overall pick in the NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills. Coach Brooks played five years in the NFL before embarking on a successful career as a front office executive for the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers. He currently works as a Regional Manager for USA Football and shares his football knowledge through his weekly articles on SI.com, appearances on the NFL Channel on Sirius Radio and the NFL Network’s “College Football Now.” Coach Brooks and his family live in Encino.
JUSTIN BERENSON
Assistant Varsity Coach

Coach Berenson returns to Notre Dame after serving as the JV head coach in 2000-2001.  From 2001-2009 he served as the offensive line coach at Pierce College, offensive coordinator at Alemany High School, head football coach at Buena High School and defensive coordinator at Grace Brethren High School. He is a graduate of Alemany High School.  He played college football at Pierce College, CSUN and Cal Lutheran where he graduated in 1998 with a degree in Psychology. He received his teaching credential from CSUN in 2003 and is currently the Resource Specialist teacher at Van Nuys Elementary School. He is married to Michelle. They have a three year old daughter and are expecting another in January. They live in Simi Valley.
JAKE GOOSEN-BROWN
Assistant Varsity / Junior Varsity Head Coach

Coach Goossen-Brown is a 2006 graduate of Notre Dame High School. He played two years of varsity football and was a member of the 2004 CIF Division III Championship team. He coaches the offensive and defensive lines. This will be Coach Goossen-Brown’s fifth season with the Knights. Coach Goossen-Brown attends California State University Northridge, majoring in Kinesiology. He is also the Athletic Director and Physical Education coach at St. Francis de Sales Elementary School. He resides in Sherman Oaks.TIM TROBEC
Assistant Varsity / JV Coach

This is Coach Trobec’s eighth year as a volunteer coach at Notre Dame. He moved here from Minnesota where he graduated and played football at St. John’s University. His
college coach was John Gagliardi, who broke the record for the most wins in college football history. Tim currently resides in Sherman Oaks and is an actor. JIMMY WELKER
Assistant Varsity / JV Coach

This is Coach Welker’s first year coaching outside linebackers at Notre Dame. He was a QB/WR & DE at NDHS from 2000-2004, winning back-to-back CIF titles in 2002 and 2003.  As a walk-on at LSU, he was a QB from 2004 to2007 and was part of the 2007 National Championship Team under Les Miles. He also coached at Lab High School in Louisiana as the Offensive Coordinator.  He has been playing arena football for the last two seasons with the Tulsa Talons and the Bossier-Shreveport Battlewings.
ED EVANS
Assistant Varsity / JV Coach

Coach Evans has coached football for over a decade and is a co-founder of the Valley Panthers Youth Football program. In the 2007 football season, he coached the Junior Varsity linebackers at Granada Hills Charter High School. Coach Evans played football at Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles and at Eastern Washington University. He graduated from California State University Los Angeles with a B.A. in Radio, TV & Film and resides in the Northridge area with his wife and four children.
DANA VASQUEZ
Assistant Athletic Director

Dana Vasquez is in her seventh year at Notre Dame as the Assistant Athletic Director and Anatomy teacher. Dana comes to us after 10 years as the Assistant Athletic Director and Anatomy/Physiology teacher at Louisville High School. She graduated from California State University Northridge (CSUN) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology. She also played on CSUN’s NCAA National Championship Softball team (1981-1985). This is her seventh year as the Varsity Lady Knights Softball Coach. She has a Masters’ degree in Sports Psychology from San Francisco State University and a credential in Administrative Education from Mount St. Mary’s College.CINDY KRAMER
Head Athletic Trainer

Cindy Kramer MS, ATC, CSCS is in her 23rd year as Head Athletic Trainer at Notre Dame High School. She is a 1980 graduate of California State University, Northridge with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education. In 1987, she became a Certified Athletic Trainer. In addition to being Head Athletic Trainer, she is currently teaching Physical Education and Sports Medicine classes. Cindy started the Sports Medicine Program at Notre Dame in 1990. Starting with just two students helping after school, the program now consists of over 30 students participating in two levels of UC Lab Science classes while gaining experience working with athletes. Cindy has continued her education receiving a Master’s in Sports Science, Sports Medicine from USSA in 2004 and becoming CSCS certified in 2007. Fondly known as “Coach Kramer,” she is an extremely valued and appreciated part of our Notre Dame family.MELANIE FRIAS
Assistant Athletic Trainer

Melanie Frias, MS, ATC, CMT, recently joined the Notre Dame athletic program. Previously, she was the Head Athletic Trainer at Bellarmine-Jefferson High School. Melanie was a graduate assistant trainer at Azusa Pacific University working with the women’s volleyball team as well as the men’s and women’s tennis teams. Prior to working at APU, she was student athletic trainer at Pasadena City College for four years. Melanie received her AA and AS degrees from Pasadena City College in 2002, followed by a bachelor’s degree in 2004 in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training from California State University, Northridge. She is certified in massage therapy and earned a Master’s degree in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University in 2007.
