Head Football Coach
Coach Kevin Rooney has been Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Notre Dame High School since 1980. Since 1993, Notre Dame Football has been one of the most consistently successful programs in the state of California. Over that span Notre Dame has won 16 League Championships, 4 CIF Championships, and was CIF Runner-up 3 times. The undefeated 2004 team was named the Division II State Champions, number 2 in the Western United States and ranked 11th in the nation. In 8 of the last 14 years, Notre Dame Football has ranked among the top 25 in the nation at some point during the season, including 7th in the nation by Sports Illustrated during the 2008 season. In 2013 Notre Dame was named among the top 10 Football Dynasties in the State of California by Max Preps.
During his career Coach Rooney has been named CIF Coach of the Year 4 times, Coach of the Year twice each by the Los Angeles Times and Los Angeles Daily News, California State Coach of the Year by Cal Hi Sports, West Region Coach of the Year by Schutt Sports and was awarded the Gerald R. Ford All American High School Coach Award by the American Football Foundation. He has also been inducted into the California Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Under Coach Rooney’s tutelage, Notre Dame Football has produced 5 USA Today Parade Magazine All-Americans (Chris Sailer 1995, Justin Fargas 1997, Travis Johnson 2000, Kai Forbath 2006 and Dayne Crist 2008), 4 U.S. Army Bowl All Americans (Kai Forbath 2006, Anthony McDonald 2008, Wes Horton 2008 and Dayne Crist 2008), 2 Gatorade California State Players of the Year (Justin Fargas 1997 and Ryan Kasdorf 2009), 2 Cal-Hi State Athletes of the Year (Giancarlo Stanton 2006-2007 and Khalfani Muhammad 2011-2012 and 2012-2013) and 81 All CIF Players.
Assistant Varsity Coach
Coach McNab is in his 36th year at Notre Dame. He coaches the defensive backs, wide receivers and serves as Defensive Coordinator. Year in and year out, Coach McNab’s defenses are among the top in Southern California. His stop units are always known for their sound fundamental play and relentless pursuit. He also serves as Notre Dame’s Head Boys’ and Girls’ Track Coach. Coach McNab played football, baseball and ran track at Serra High in San Mateo. He graduated from the University of Santa Clara where he played football and rugby while earning his degree in History.
He has taught Physical Education, History and Religion while at Notre Dame. Coach McNab and his wife Neezer reside in Northridge with their sons, Matthew ‘13, and Ryan ‘16.
Assistant Varsity Coach
Coach Curiel begins his 17th year at Notre Dame High School coaching linebackers, tight ends and coordinator of Special Teams. He graduated from Notre Dame in 1990 where he was First Team All League, Defensive MVP, and a Daily News All Star. Coach Curiel went on to be an All-Conference Linebacker at Glendale College and a NSCA strength and conditioning All-American. He then attended Portland State University and was awarded the football team’s M.P. Schrunk Academic and Athletic Award. He graduated from Portland State with degrees in both Social Science and Biology Science. He then received his Master’s in Education at Grand Canyon University. He served one year as a Graduate Assistant Coach at Portland State before returning to Notre Dame where he teaches Chemistry. Mike routinely speaks at clinics in the off-season regarding linebacker and Special Teams coaching and development. Mike enjoys fly fishing and rafting over the summer breaks. He and his wife Traci, along with their two newborn daughters, reside in Sherman Oaks.
Assistant Varsity Coach
Coach Brooks, a former standout football and track athlete, graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with a degree in communications. This is his third season as an Assistant Varsity Coach at Notre Dame. He was selected as the 48th overall pick in the NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. Coach Brooks played five years in the NFL before embarking on a successful career as a front office executive for the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers. He currently works for NFL Media as an analyst on various NFL Network shows including “NFL HQ,” “Path to The Draft,” “Inside Training Camp,” and “NFL Combine Live.” Brooks also serves as the Head Wide Receiver Coach on Student Sports/Nike Football’s “The Opening,” and “Elite 11,” tours, which features the nation’s most elite high school football players. Coach Brooks and his family live in Encino.
Assistant Varsity / Junior Varsity Head Coach
Coach Goossen-Brown is a 2006 graduate of Notre Dame High School. He played two years of Varsity football and was a member of the 2004 CIF Division III Championship team. He coaches the offensive and defensive lines. Coach Goossen-Brown is attending California State University, Northridge majoring in Kinesiology. He is also the Head Junior Varsity Softball Coach and this will be his will be his ninth year coaching football at Notre Dame.
Assistant Varsity Coach / Strength and Conditioning Coach
Coach Garcia is the Strength Training coach for Notre Dame Football. He is a graduate of St. Francis High School in Mountain View, California, where he won ALL-WCAL Honors as an offensive guard in football and as a shot putter in track and field. Coach Garcia continued his football career at San Jose City College where he started as a linebacker and continued to throw in shot put. He accepted a track scholarship to California State University Northridge. While at CSUN, Coach Garcia earned a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Kinesiology. He was also a two-time Big Sky champion in shot put. Coach Garcia teaches Physical Education at Notre Dame, coaches the throwing events for track and eld, and is the Strength Training and Conditioning coach. He resides in North Hills.
Assistant Varsity / JV Coach
This is Coach Trobec’s 14th year as a coach at Notre Dame. This year he will be filling the position of Head Videographer of Notre Dame Football. Trobec moved to California from Minnesota where he played football and graduated from St. John’s University. Tim resides in Sherman Oaks and is an actor as well.
Assistant Athletic Director
Dana Vasquez is in her 13th year at Notre Dame as the Assistant Athletic Director, an Anatomy & Physiology teacher and Varsity Softball Coach. She graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Kinesiology. Dana played on CSUN’s NCAA National Championship Softball team (1981-1985), winning consecutive national titles from 1983-1985. The 1983 Championship team was inducted into CSUN’s 2012 Athletic Hall of Fame with the 1984 & 1985 Championship teams inducted this past summer of 2016. Dana is a member of the CIF Softball Advisor Committee which assists the CIF Commissioner’s office in overseeing the seven divisions of softball in the Southern Section. She has a Master’s Degree in Sports Psychology from San Francisco State University and a Credential in Administrative Education from Mount St. Mary’s College.
Head Athletic Trainer
Cindy Kramer MS, ATC, CSCS, is in her 29th year as Head Athletic Trainer at Notre Dame High School. She is a 1980 graduate of California State University, Northridge with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education. In 1987 she became a Certificate Athletic Trainer. In addition to being the Head Athletic Trainer, she is teaching Sports Medicine and Advanced Sports Medicine classes. Coach Kramer started the Sports Medicine Program at Notre dame in 1990. The program consists of over 100 students participating in two levels of UC Lab Science classes while gaining experience working with athletes. Coach Kramer has continued her education receiving a Master’s in Sports Science, Sports Medicine from USSA in 2004, and became CSCS certified in 2007.
Assitant Athletic Trainer
Joe Cardenas MS, ATC, is in his second year as the Assistant athletic Trainer at Notre Dame High School. He has 10 years of experience as an Athletic Trainer. Joe graduated in 2006 from California State University of Northridge with a Bachelor’s in Science degree in Kinesiology with the option in Athletic Training. He also just completed his Master’s degree this past spring from Azusa Pacific University in Physical Education with an emphasis in Sports Management and Leadership. Joe also served as a CSUN Athletic Training Student at Notre Dame High School during 2005-2006 school year for football. Joe and his fiancé Dinesa have a one-year-old son.
