Coach's Message

Notre Dame Cross Country is family of student athletes, coaches, parents and alumni who all work together towards a common goal. The Running Knights’ program has developed significantly over the past few years because of a supportive team framework and the commitment of all involved. Our slogan is “There is no substitution for dedication.” Cross country is the fastest growing high school sport in America largely because anyone who wants to run and compete can! There is a place for any runner regardless of ability and we welcome everyone. It helps that we are very competitive in one of the toughest conferences in Southern California and are competing at a State level.

Our mission is to develop each runner to the best of their ability as an individual, student and athlete.  We practice at Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Park, Balboa Park, on the track at ND, and at the Victory Trail Head on Saturdays, where many parents join us by taking long walks on the beautiful trails on Ahmanson Ranch.  Our races are primary at Crescenta Valley Park, and Mt. Sac College in Walnut. The State Championships are held at Woodwark Park in Fresno in late November.  Every week an e-mail of the team’s schedule and our activities is sent out to all in our family. We are looking forward to a great season.

NDXC is going to be a lot of fun!

The Running Knights of ’12 will be the biggest NDXC team in history. An estimated seventy-five harriers will represent the blue and gold across hill and dale this fall. The girl’s team is loaded with six returning seniors, Kazia Mermel, Stephanie LaFace, Lily Peterson, Miranda Cornwell, Mia Gilbert and Maggie Guinnip. New cross country runners Elizabeth Coda, Camilla Nwodeki, Rebecca Vasquez, will be battling for the varsity’s top seven. The boys are led by returning seniors Jack Apablasa, and Alex Reilly, along with juniors Matthew Meredith, Sean Gallagher, sophomores Brennan Doyle, Michael Mudy, and Christian Meyer as well as incoming freshman Lucas DeLeon.
The Running Knight nation had a strong summer training season, highlighted by our annual trek to Mammoth Lakes where US Olympian marathoner,  Meb Keflezighi, 4th place in London, joined us in a ‘photo op’ at Lake Mary.
This year all three Mission League meets will be held on Notre Dame’s home cross country course in Woodley Park this year, making it a lot more convenient for family and supporters to view the action. Woodley Park is next to the Japanese Gardens off of Woodley between Burbank and Victory. The course is east of Woodley back by the Cricket Fields.
Both NDXC teams will be very competitive in the tough Mission League. As always our goal is to make the State Meet, where the boys have been two out of the past three years and have had three first team All-State Runners in the last five years. It’s time for the girls to join the party at Woodward Park in Fresno on November 27th.
