Attention Parents: Learn About the CloseUp Washington, D.C. Civic Education Trip at the Parent Meeting on Thursday, May 23rd at 7 p.m.
It’s time to get excited! Notre Dame is participating in a dynamic, hands-on, civic education program for students in Washington, DC!This opportunity is available to next year’s juniors and seniors. With more than 40 years of experience, CloseUp is the nation’s largest non-profit and non-partisan citizenship education organization. They are driven by a mission to help young people become more active and informed citizens. Their lesson plans complement the curriculum that NDHS students focus on throughout the school year, and CloseUp’s interactive teaching methods inspire and empower students. To learn more about the trip, Social Studies Department Chair Jeremy Nelson, Ryen Kim, our CloseUp representative, and Social Studies instructor Tim Stark will hold an information meeting on Thursday, May 23rd at 7 pm in the NDHS Lecture Hall to discuss cost, trip dates, and other program logistics.
While on CloseUp in Washington, DC, students will have the opportunity to live and learn with young people from around the country while engaging in seminars with policymakers and explorations of historical sites and government offices. This 6-day/5-night program will prepare students to participate in the democratic process AND give them an inside look at the capital of our great nation!Here are just a few highlights of the week:
●Discussions of key domestic and international issues with members of Congress and their staff, Washington insiders, and other leading policy experts;
●Comprehensive study visits to the significant historical sites and cultural neighborhoods of our nation’s capital;
●Daily small-group workshops that encourage students to connect what they see in DC with what they are learning in the classroom back home;
●Self-directed time with teachers to explore the nation’s capital.
If you are unable to attend the meeting, please feel free to contact Tim Stark at firstname.lastname@example.org, for additional information.
