CPR and Sudden Cardiac Arrest Screening for Student-Athletes

Notre Dame is hosting a sudden cardiac arrest screening on March 11. Sudden Cardiac Arrest, or SCA, is the #1 killer of teen student-athletes in the US. Most cardiac anomalies go undetected in teens because EKGs and, more than likely, echocardiograms are not part of a student athlete’s pre-participation physical exam.  The Heartbeat of Champions Foundation, run by Edwin Cabico, an alum of Notre Dame High School Class of 1980, is a non-profit corporation that screens high school teens and teen student-athletes for signs and symptoms of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).  The Foundation sponsors events where a detailed family history is taken, accompanied by an EKG and an Echocardiogram.  The Foundation’s board-certified cardiologist will read the exams and provide a risk assessment and provide information to the parents if the student needs to follow up with their physician or a specialist.   The organization will also offer how to perform CPR to those wishing to learn.

The Heartbeat of Champions Foundation will sponsor a free (donations appreciated) screening event at Notre Dame on March 11th from 1-6 p.m. Student-athletes can sign up by clicking the link below.

There are 40 spots available for this event. Please contact Head Athletic Trainer Cindy Kramer at kramer@ndhs.org for any questions. Click on the link for more information about the Heartbeat of Champions Foundation:  https://heartbeatofchampions.org/
