Virtual Freshman Assembly (Mandatory)

On Thursday, October 22 at X-period we are holding a special assembly for the freshman class on the dangers of distracted driving.  A significant number of freshmen will receive their learners permit before the end of this freshman year, and throughout the summer before they return as sophomores. Now in its 10th year at Notre Dame, this assembly is designed to encourage students to think carefully about the responsibilities that await them as young drivers. The assembly is sponsored and presented by a former parent and current member of the NDHS Board of Director,  Jeri Dye Lynch, and this particular assembly is a very meaningful tradition that connects all NDHS Knights who have graduated in the past decade.
On October 19, 2010, while he was sixteen years old and a junior here at NDHS,  Jeri’s son Conor was training as a member of our cross country team. He was crossing Woodman Avenue at Addison Street when he was hit by a car and killed by a distracted, unlicensed, hit-and-run driver. The young woman who killed him was eighteen years old. Coincidentally, this tragedy occurred during National Teen Safe Driving Week.
Since Conor’s untimely death, Jeri has advocated locally, as well as nationally to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving and the importance of pedestrian safety and safe streets in general. Jeri, on behalf of the Conor Lynch Foundation, has also participated internationally. Conor’s official video, a story about the day Conor was killed, was included in the international road safety film festivals in Brazil at the capitol (November 2015) and in Geneva at the United Nations (February 2017). Jeri presents that PSA at high schools and other venues throughout the year.
