Cybersecurity Awareness and Tips

Dear Notre Dame Community,

As you may have heard, a rather large cyber attack on US companies, including departments within the US Government, is currently unfolding. Unfortunately, things will continue to get worse and some of our vendors and community members will fall victim to a cyber attack in the near future. It saddens me to say that this is our new norm and that it will continue to be so for the unforeseeable future. I strongly advise everyone to be extra cautious moving forward, particularly during the holiday season when many of these attacks are launched. Remember that it’s always ‘Holiday Season’ for the cybercriminals and they are always planning to get rich at your expense.

The Joint Cybersecurity Advisory, which is comprised of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC), recently published an alert to all K-12 Schools regarding an increase in reported cyber attacks. Attacks were up by 58% in August and September alone and have more than likely increased since then. Notre Dame has, and continues, to significantly invest in Cybersecurity on multiple fronts and is actively monitoring systems and network activity.

In an effort to help you better understand the potential risks to each member of our community, the Technology Department has composed a brief list of what we have recently seen along with some tips that will help you reduce the risk of being compromised. Should you become a victim of a cyber attack, please file a report with the local authorities and reach out to techsupport@ndhs.org immediately so that we may assist you in changing your NDHS passwords. If you receive a message from a cybercriminal that may have compromised someone with whom you are associated, please delete the message immediately and do not engage with them as you risk compromising yourself.

Wishing you all a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year!
