Today’s Black History announcement celebrates two students who are student body leaders at their respective institutions. The first student is Sydney Barber, a 21-year-old midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy, who became the first African American woman to serve as a brigade commander when she stepped into that role last month. In her new role, Barber leads 4,000 midshipmen. She says she is inspired by her dad, who graduated from the academy in 1991, and other black Academy graduates like Janie Mines. Mines was the first black woman to graduate from the Naval Academy in 1980. The second student is Noah Harris, a junior at Harvard University. Harris is the first black man to serve as student body president in the 384-year history of the university. He was elected to his new position in November 2020. Harris says he is grateful for this opportunity and acknowledges the roles of others who paved the way for him, such as W.E.B. DuBois, the first African American to graduate from Harvard, and Fentrice Driskell, first black woman to serve as Harvard’s student body president. Driskell currently serves in the Florida House of Representatives.
