Hispanic Heritage Month’s focus today is on the Independence days of several Spanish-speaking countries in the Americas. In 1968 Congress passed Pub. L. 90-498 to begin the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Week to coincide with September 15 and 16 this law acknowledges September 15th as the independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua from Spain. México celebrates its independence on September 16 and Chile on September 18. In 1988, that law was amended to establish the observation of National Hispanic Heritage Month to celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of US citizens with ancestors from Spain, México, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Today we invite you at home, enjoy this La Bamba Unity Video a virtual video of musicians from all over the world who perform the song “La Bamba”. It shows how music unites people, so beautifully.
