FAITH AND SERVICE

Retreats

Kairos is a four-day retreat that focuses on encountering God through relationships with self and others.  Kairos, Greek for "a time with God," is a poignant retreat program offered to NDHS seniors. Kairos Retreats are held in summer, fall, winter, and late spring. Kairos is a three-night, four-day, overnight retreat. During the retreat, students and adult leaders share presentations centered on the critical themes of knowing oneself, discovering Jesus personally, recognizing and responding to God's call, and living the message of Christ.  The team of leaders is comprised of students, members of the Campus Ministry team, and other faculty and staff members.

Immersion is a retreat specifically geared for those in the junior class, which gives students an opportunity to better understand the Catholic missionary spirit of Blessed Father Moreau and the Congregation of Holy Cross. Father Moreau stated, "Our concern for the dignity of every human being as God’s cherished child directs our care to victims of every injury: prejudice, famine, warfare, ignorance, infidelity, abuse, a natural calamity." By fully immersing themselves in a commitment to social studies and justice activities, as well as service-learning and community engagement, our students live out the mission of Holy Cross. The goal is to give students the competence to identify social issues and have the courage to take action.  Immersion is a three-day retreat experience.  Immersion is offered in both overnight and non-overnight formats (depending upon retreat availability). Students do not report to class these three days, instead, they are actively participating in educating themselves on various social justice topics that are pertinent to our Los Angeles community, as well as learning new ways to live out the love ethics of Christ in social advocacy (St. Luke 10:27).  The cost to attend this retreat will be $200, which covers transportation, materials, and meals (subject to change with prior notification). Immersion is a commitment, and only students who actively participate throughout the entire retreat will receive all of their Christian Service hours for their junior year.

Kairos 2023-2024 (Senior Retreat)

Kairos is a four-day retreat that focuses on encountering God through relationships with self and others. The Mission Theme of this retreat is Educating Hearts and Minds, as we strive to show that it is essential to educate both the heart and the mind in equal capacities. The retreat takes place at Mater Dolorosa Retreat Center in Sierra Madre, CA. Throughout the retreat, students will have the opportunity to grow in their faith through small groups, listening to talks from both faculty and peers and experiencing the Sacraments.

Ignite 2023-2024 (Sophomore Retreat)

  • Ignite is a two-day retreat for our sophomore class that focuses on the Mission Team of Bringing Hope. This flows from the charisms and spirituality of the Congregation of Holy Cross as “people with hope to bring.” One day, this retreat allows students to visit the Museum of Tolerance to learn about the Holocaust in both historic and contemporary contexts and confront various forms of prejudice and discrimination in our world today through interactive exhibits, Holocaust survivors, and group discussions. In partnership with the Museum of Tolerance, students are challenged to look at their personal agency to create positive change. On the second day, the retreat begins with Mass and follows with a day of service solidifying the connection between faith and justice.
  • Please contact Ms. Belanio belanio@ndhs.org with any questions regarding Ignite.

Freshman Retreat 2023-2024 (Holy Cross Day)

  • Led by senior members of the Holy Cross Leadership Class and Faculty, this is a fun-filled day that gives students the opportunity to self-reflect, form new friendships, set goals for the upcoming year, pray with fellow students, and focus on the Mission Theme of Being Family. This retreat will give students an understanding of our Holy Cross Heritage and challenge them to take ownership of their high school journey with advice from their senior peers. Transitioning from middle school into high school can be an overwhelming process and this retreat gives freshmen the space and time to nurture their heart as well as their minds.
