Brother Stephen Walsh, CSC, believed in the transformative power of education—and the vital role alumni play in sustaining it. During his time at Notre Dame High School, Brother Stephen recognized that the strength of any institution lies not only in its faculty and students but also in the enduring support of those who once walked its halls. His vision of alumni giving as a lifelong habit laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of Catholic education support.
In 1985, Brother Stephen pioneered Notre Dame’s first-ever phone-a-thon, raising an impressive $76,000. Yet, for him, the true success of the initiative wasn’t in the dollar amount—it was in the participation. He understood that cultivating a culture of consistent giving, no matter how small the donation, was essential for the school’s long-term stability. As he often remarked, “Big donations grow from small donations.”
Inspired by his philosophy, The Walsh Society honors and continues Brother Stephen’s vision. It represents a community of alumni, parents, and friends committed to ensuring that Notre Dame’s legacy of excellence endures for generations. Through recurring gifts, major donations, and estate planning, members of The Walsh Society provide the financial foundation necessary to sustain the school’s mission—expanding access, enhancing programs, and supporting students in need.
Alumni giving is more than a contribution—it’s a statement of gratitude. It’s a way of ensuring that future generations have access to the same transformative education that shaped so many lives. By joining The Walsh Society, alumni and community members affirm their lasting connection to Notre Dame, making an impact that reaches far beyond their years on campus.
Through The Walsh Society, we carry forward his belief in the power of collective giving—ensuring that Notre Dame continues to inspire, educate, and transform lives for years to come.
