College Counseling

Welcome to College Counseling

At NDHS, our college counselors provide ample support and information for parents and guardians of our college-bound seniors.

Once assigned a college counselor, students have access to essay workshops, UC/CSU application sessions, over 125 campus visits from college admissions representatives, and our annual college fair. Our counselors also meet individually with seniors to help them complete applications, proofread their essays, assist them with the financial aid process, navigate scholarships, and write customized letters of recommendation for each senior.

In the spring of sophomore year, the counseling department holds a college admissions night presentation. There is one formal parent college information meeting held in the spring semester of junior year and one meeting held during the fall semester of senior year. An additional meeting about financial aid for college is also provided to senior families in the fall. College counselors also sponsor monthly parent breakfasts throughout junior and senior year where they meet informally with small groups of parents to discuss college-related issues and answer questions.

  • Parent Coffee Sessions

Parent Coffee Sessions are optional sessions to allow parents to have the floor to ask questions and receive immediate feedback from the counselors in an informal, comfortable setting. There is no set agenda. Attendance is not mandatory, and parents may come/leave when they need to as their schedule allows. Check “Mark Your Calendars” (above) to see the details.   If you are unable to attend and do have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's counselor directly - we are here to help!
  • Naviance

We encourage students to make use of the Naviance College Exploration System during summer. Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors should take every opportunity to acquaint themselves with the extensive Naviance resources that are available, including career exploration tools and college choice management tools. Naviance also offers FREE SAT and ACT practice for those who plan to take the tests. Seniors should focus on researching schools, and narrowing down their choices to a reasonable list of colleges to which they will apply in the fall.

Seniors should focus on continuing to explore schools, attending virtual ND rep visits, narrowing down their college list, and finishing their essays. ALL SCHOOLS that you are applying to MUST be added to your “Applying to List” in Naviance. We will be unable to send documents to colleges on your behalf if they are not on this list.

  • College Rep Visits

Each fall, admissions representatives from all over the US, Canada, and the UK visit Notre Dame students on campus as an opportunity for students to learn more about specific schools, admissions, and ask reps questions. Students are welcome to sign up for as many visits as they would like, and seniors are especially encouraged to attend visits for schools they are considering or planning to apply to. Please check the full list in Naviance to sign up. While most will be in-person, some will be virtual. All visits are intended for students, not parents.
  • Transcripts

Seniors, transcripts will be sent automatically through Naviance by your counselor. Any colleges you are applying to must be included in your “Colleges I’m Applying To” list on Naviance in order to have your transcript sent.
  • SAT & ACT Testing

College Board News Alert: College Board has announced significant changes in the CollegeBoard testing programs: SAT Subjects tests and the SAT Optional Essay are now both permanently discontinued.

The Counseling Office is staying vigilant and monitoring changes to the testing landscape. Many universities continue to announce Test Optional or Test Blind policies for the next year and beyond, which is now nearly 1,600 colleges nationwide including UCs and Cal State Universities. It is important to note: while admission offices may inform these policies, test scores may still be an aspect of admission for selective universities, selective majors, or selective scholarships.

The College Board (SAT) and ACT have opened registration for the 2021-2022 academic year. Be advised that these dates fill up quickly and might be canceled/rescheduled if testing conditions are deemed unsafe by the test site administrators. If your student can take any of these exams, please expect that they may only have the chance to take either test once, especially summer test dates where sites are limited. Below are the current schedules for national SAT & ACT test dates. Please visit www.CollegeBoard.org and www.ACTStudent.org directly to register and for up-to-date information regarding day-of testing.
  • Virtual College Tours

While some college campuses may still be closed, they are trying to keep prospective students engaged by bringing their campuses to you with virtual tours, live chats, and informational sessions. Be sure to visit college websites and contact college admission offices directly for the most up-to-date information regarding visit options in person or virtually. In addition to Naviance and the colleges’ website, YouVisit or CampusReel are two excellent sites for virtual exploration.
