Philosophy

A physically educated person is one who has mastered the necessary movement skills to participate confidently in many different forms of physical activity, values physical fitness, and understands that both are intimately related to health and well-being.  

The Notre Dame curriculum addresses the student’s fundamental need for regular physical activity to remain healthy and promotes many of the attitudes and behaviors that reduce health risks, including development and understanding of the need for appropriate nutrition and exercise.  

Boys Athletics

  • Personal Fitness

    In this course students will become familiar with concepts related to the physiology of exercise, become knowledgeable consumers in relation to fitness, and experience a wide variety of exercises for flexibility, muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance. 

    Prerequisites/Comments - This is a required course for all 9th grade students.
  • Recreational Sports - 9th Grade (Co-Ed)

    This co-ed PE course includes instruction and play in a variety of team sports such as basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball and football. Students will learn history, rules, and strategies of the sports and become proficient in the appropriate skills. 

    Prerequisites/Comments - Carefully choose the correct course ID number. Course #6280 is for 9th grade students only and course ID#6530 is for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. Depending on enrollment, courses may be combined.
  • Recreational Sports - 10th, 11th & 12th Grade (Co-Ed)

    This co-ed PE course includes instruction and play in a variety of team sports such as basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball and football. Students will learn history, rules, and strategies of the sports and become proficient in the appropriate skills. 

    Prerequisites/Comments - Carefully choose the correct course ID number. Course #6280 is for 9th grade students only and course ID#6530 is for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. Depending on enrollment, courses may be combined.
  • Lifetime Fitness & Recreation

    This course is designed to provide students opportunities to engage in fitness and recreation activities that will help them to develop a lifelong fitness program. The course will include activities such as cardio kickboxing, yoga, weight training, bowling, Ping-Pong, tennis, golf, ultimate Frisbee, and swimming. There is a fee for this course. 

    Prerequisites/Comments - This is an elective course for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students.
  • Team Sports

    This course includes instruction and play in a variety of team sports such as basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball and football. Students will learn history, rules and strategies of the sports and become proficient in the appropriate skills. 

    Prerequisites/Comments - This is an elective course for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students
  • Weight Training

    Students will learn advanced weight training techniques and the newest concepts in strength and muscle development. Students will spend time each class period working on their personalized training regimen. 

    Prerequisites/Comments - This is an elective course for 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students.
  • Baseball

    Prerequisites/Comments - Elective courses for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students who are on a team or who are approved by the coaches in the various sports. Students must have the approval of the present coach to pre-register for the course.   • Basketball

Girls Athletics

  • Dance I

    Primary skills of Ballet are taught to lay a foundation that will solidify knowledge of dance to ensure opportunities of progression in various styles and levels of dance and/or other art mediums beyond their years at Notre Dame. Skills will be learned through barre and centre technique to develop full body awareness and proper muscular development. During the progression of the course physicality will be increased through primary traveling across the floor and visual learning will be exercised through short phrase combinations. Universal ballet terms, proper stretch, injury prevention& care, and performance education are covered throughout this course. Students will learn the history of dance through the development of modern from ballet, world dance, various genres and techniques within. During the latter part of the course after a technical term foundation is set some basic styles of dance including jazz, hip hop, country line and street dance will be explored through combinations. Students will learn how to write a research and critique paper on an artistic work through the lens of history of dance

    Prerequisites/Comments - This elective course is open to all students

  • Cheerleading - 9th Grade (Semester 1)

    Freshman cheerleaders utilize this time to practice and perfect routines and performances under the direction of their coach.  This course is one semester.

    Prerequisites/Comments - 9th grade students who have made the cheerleading squad will be enrolled in the course. Try-outs are held in April. 
  • Cheerleading

    Qualified cheerleaders utilize this time to practice and perfect routines and performances under the direction of their coach.

    Prerequisites/Comments - 10th, 11th and 12th grade students who have made the varsity cheerleading squad will be enrolled in the course. Try-outs are held in April. 
  • Soccer

    Prerequisites/Comments - Elective courses for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students who are on a team or who are approved by the coaches in the various sports. Students must have the approval of the present coach to pre-register for the course. Participating on a Notre Dame sports team for one season will satisfy the second semester of the ND physical education graduation requirement.
  • Softball (Semester 2)

    Prerequisites/Comments - Elective courses for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students who are on a team or who are approved by the coaches in the various sports. Students must have the approval of the present coach to pre-register for the course. Participating on a Notre Dame sports team for one season will satisfy the second semester of the ND physical education graduation requirement.
  • Songleading

    Songleading is an advanced level course for students with several years of prior dance experience in Ballet, Jazz, and Contemporary dance styles. This course is for students who have a strong passion for performing. Students in this course will perform at all school functions. Students will learn advanced technical skills and will focus on connecting emotionally to choreography and performance. Instruction will also include strengthening and flexibility classes to work on range of motion and conditioning of the body. Dance Team will perform and entertain audiences through precision dances and to boost morale and spirit of the school. The purpose shall also be to develop character, leadership, and individual responsibility in each member, while maintaining high moral standards. This course is intended to prepare students to compete at the national high level. Therefore, students will focus on technique, performing & choreography. This class will give dancers the opportunity to increase their strength and flexibility. Students will execute movement in a variety of genres (jazz, ballet, hip hop), demonstrating the ability to memorize choreography and execute technique with proper alignment and musicality. Finally, students are encouraged to develop a sense of self-expression and self-confidence and experience a sense of accomplishment.

  • Tennis
